Actor Vishal, who has carved a niche for himself as one of Tamil cinema’s popular stars, is now embarking on a new journey as a director with his upcoming film ‘Magudam’. The film, which also features Vishal in the lead role, is gearing up for a theatrical release on August 14.

Speaking at an event organised ahead of the film’s release, Vishal opened up about his 35-year-long dream of becoming a director, the challenges he faced while making the film and the people who supported him throughout his journey.

Vishal began by expressing his gratitude to producer R.B. Choudary for giving him the opportunity to make the film and for placing his trust in him.

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his future wife, Sai Dhanshika, who stood by him during a difficult phase when he had not acted in a film for nearly 14 months.

Vishal also thanked Tiruppur Subramaniam for the encouragement and confidence he had placed in him. He said that the platform provided by him had played an important role in shaping Magudam and that he had worked extremely hard to ensure that the trust placed in him did not go in vain.

A Challenging Journey Behind the Camera

Speaking about his experience as a filmmaker, Vishal described Magudam as one of the most challenging projects of his career.

While he had to perform in front of the camera as an actor, he also had several responsibilities behind the camera as a director. Vishal revealed that he experimented with the way certain scenes were performed, including asking actors to begin performing a few seconds after he called for the action, as it would help him during the editing process.

He further appreciated the entire cast and crew for allowing him the freedom to contribute across different departments.

Vishal said that nobody on the team questioned why he was giving inputs regarding performances, music or stunt sequences. According to him, the absence of ego within the team was one of the key reasons why Magudam shaped up so well.

He credited director Bala for teaching him how to bring out the best performances from actors. Vishal particularly thanked actors including Dushara, Anjali, John Vijay, Maya and Ashwin for understanding his vision and performing according to his direction.

“Be Confident About Your Dreams”

Vishal revealed that becoming a director had been his dream for the past 35 years.

Recalling the early days of his career, he spoke about how his father waited for nearly four hours when Vishal wanted to join actor-director Arjun as an assistant director.

Vishal expressed his gratitude to his father for encouraging him and helping him stay committed to his dream.

He also recalled that his mother played a crucial role in his entry into acting, particularly in making sure that he got the opportunity to act in Sandakozhi.

Vishal stated that both his parents have played extremely important roles in his career.

He further revealed that he is the 45th debutant director introduced by R.B. Choudary and that Magudam is the 99th production from Super Good Films.

Vishal also thanked his mentor, Action King Arjun, saying that Arjun was the person who gave him an opportunity to act and that he learned a great deal about filmmaking from him.

He recalled watching Ram Gopal Varma’s Udayam and developing the desire to become a filmmaker.

“Today, that dream has finally become a reality. If we remain confident about our dreams, they will certainly come true. This applies not just to cinema but to every field,” Vishal said.

Vishal Praises the ‘Magudam’ Team

Vishal had words of appreciation for his technical team as well.

He said cinematographer Richard had been known to him for many years and understood his visual preferences and creative sensibilities.

He also praised director Sundar C, saying that he has the ability to handle every situation with ease and that Vishal had learned several valuable lessons from him.

Vishal described writer Pon. Parthiban as someone who understands his style and can write dialogues that suit him perfectly.

He had special words of appreciation for music composer G.V. Prakash Kumar, calling him a blessing for debutant filmmakers.

Vishal said G.V. Prakash had given life to Magudam through his music and expressed his gratitude to the composer for his contribution to the film.

He also thanked lyricists Umadevi, Ekadasi, Vivek and Karuna, along with Dileep, for their contributions to the project.

“The Last Eight Minutes Will Create Magic”

Vishal expressed confidence in the film’s climax, claiming that the climax sequence in Magudam would be unlike anything audiences had seen in other films.

He particularly highlighted the final eight minutes of the film, saying that they would create a magical experience for audiences.

Vishal also spoke about his association with actor John Vijay. Recalling that he had known John Vijay since his college days, he said that the actor’s natural mannerisms had been incorporated into his character in Magudam.

He also thanked music maestro Ilaiyaraaja for allowing his music to be used in the film.

Vishal also made a special mention of actor Vijay, whom he described as his favourite actor.

He said that he had enjoyed watching Vijay’s films at Rohini Theatre and revealed that he intends to watch Magudam at the same theatre.

Vishal acknowledged that the film is currently facing a few challenges but expressed confidence that the team would overcome them and ensure that the movie reaches theatres as planned.

Magudam is scheduled to release worldwide on August 14. Vishal also said that he would meet the media and fans again at the film’s success celebration on August 16, where he would reveal more details about the project.
