The South Indian Film Writers’ Association (SIFWA) has issued a series of official statements reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and intellectual property of screenwriters while promoting a healthy and professional creative environment in the film industry.
Signed by President Cheran, General Secretary Pattukkottai Prabhakar, and Treasurer R. Sundararajan, the statements underline the association’s resolve to stand firmly with writers and ensure that their creative contributions receive the respect and protection they deserve.
The association noted that recent controversies and public debates surrounding stories, screenplays, and creative ownership have highlighted the need for greater awareness and respect for writers’ intellectual property. It emphasized that a screenplay is the foundation of any film and that the efforts of writers should never be undermined or taken for granted.
SIFWA urged filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, and writers to resolve disputes through proper legal and organizational channels rather than through public exchanges or social media discussions. Such an approach, the association said, would help preserve professional relationships and maintain harmony within the industry.
The association also advised its members to properly register and document their stories, screenplays, and dialogues to avoid future legal complications.
