“Education and Discipline Can Help You Succeed Anywhere in the World,” Says Sivakumar

Sri Sivakumar Educational Trust Celebrates Its 47th Anniversary; Rs. 1 Lakh Award for Veteran Artist Jeevanandhan and Rs. 13.78 Lakh in Educational Assistance to Students and Organisations

Chennai: The 47th anniversary of the Sri Sivakumar Educational Trust was celebrated at the Agaram Foundation office in T. Nagar, Chennai. The event recognised academic excellence and contributions to the arts, while reaffirming the importance of making education accessible to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

As part of the celebrations, 25 students who had completed their Class 12 examinations and secured admission to college received educational scholarships. Veteran artist Jeevanandhan was honoured with an award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. Financial assistance was also extended to three organisations working towards improving educational opportunities for underprivileged communities.

A Noble Initiative That Began with a Film Salary of Rs. 25,000

The Sri Sivakumar Educational Trust was established in 1979 by veteran actor Sivakumar, who invested his entire salary of Rs. 25,000 earned from his 100th film, Rosaappoo Ravikkaikari, with the intention of using the interest generated to support students’ education.

Initially, the trust presented prizes to students. Over the years, Sivakumar also extended financial assistance from his personal funds. Since 2006, Agaram Foundation has taken complete responsibility for the trust, continuing its annual tradition of providing educational scholarships and recognising outstanding artists.

Rs. 1 Lakh Award for Veteran Artist Jeevanandhan

Alongside encouraging academic excellence, the Sri Sivakumar Educational Trust annually honours senior artists who have made significant contributions to the field of painting. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

Previous recipients include Ambulimama Shankar, Ramu, Jayaraj, Maya and Maniam Selvan. At the 47th anniversary celebration, renowned artist Jeevanandhan was honoured with the prestigious award and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh in recognition of his contribution to the arts.

25 Students Receive Educational Scholarships Worth Rs. 2.50 Lakh

Recognising the determination of students who have overcome financial challenges and other obstacles to pursue higher education, the trust awarded scholarships to 25 students who secured good marks in their Class 12 examinations and gained admission to college.

Each student received Rs. 10,000, taking the total scholarship amount to Rs. 2.50 lakh. Certificates were also presented to appreciate their achievements and encourage them to pursue their academic ambitions.

Rs. 11.28 Lakh in Financial Assistance to Three Educational Organisations

Agaram Foundation extended financial assistance to three organisations dedicated to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged children.

1. Thai Tamil Primary School, Tindivanam – Rs. 6.28 Lakh

Operating for the past 25 years in the Rosanai area of Tindivanam, Thai Tamil Primary School follows the principle that mother-tongue education is fundamental to effective learning. The school provides free education and midday meals to its students.

Agaram Foundation has supported the institution for the past 16 years. Continuing its commitment, the foundation provided a commitment letter for Rs. 6.28 lakh towards teachers’ salaries for the 2026–2027 academic year.

2. Sudar Organisation, Erode – Rs. 2 Lakh

Sudar has been working for the past 20 years to improve educational opportunities for tribal children in Erode district. The organisation operates 25 evening study centres in the Sathyamangalam and Bargur hill regions, helping school dropouts return to education and bridging learning gaps.

As a contribution towards these efforts, a cheque for Rs. 2 lakh was presented to the organisation’s founder, Natarajan.

3. Vaazhai Organisation – Rs. 3 Lakh

Founded by former students of Chennai’s Presidency College, Vaazhai initially focused on mentoring government school students in districts including Dharmapuri and Villupuram.

The organisation is currently working to improve educational standards by appointing teachers in seven government primary and middle schools in the Aiyur forest region of Krishnagiri district.

To support its ongoing initiatives, Agaram Foundation issued a commitment letter for Rs. 3 lakh as its contribution for the year.

“Education and Discipline Can Help You Succeed Anywhere in the World,” Says Sivakumar

Addressing the students at the event, veteran actor Sivakumar spoke about the importance of education, discipline and perseverance, drawing from his own life experiences.

“The one thing I want to tell students is this: if you have education and discipline, you can achieve success anywhere in the world. Do not worry about whether you were born into a poor family, whether you lost your parents or whether you grew up in a village. If you have education and discipline, you can succeed anywhere,” he said.

Recalling his childhood, Sivakumar described the challenges he faced while pursuing his education in a village where proper school buildings and facilities were lacking. He also spoke about losing his father when he was just 10 months old and how his mother worked tirelessly on their agricultural land to educate him and his sister.

Due to the family’s financial difficulties, his sister had to discontinue her education after Class 3, as the family could not afford the monthly school fees.

“I know very well how difficult it is for students from economically disadvantaged rural families to pursue education. I have personally experienced how education can transform a person’s standard of living. It gives me immense satisfaction to help students who come from backgrounds similar to mine and are determined to build a better future,” he said.

He encouraged students to remain focused on their goals, maintain discipline and work consistently towards their ambitions. He also urged them to make the best use of educational opportunities and bring pride to their families and society.

“There Is Always One More Chance in Life,” Says Suriya

Actor Suriya described the anniversary celebration as a family occasion that reflects the continuing growth of the Sivakumar family’s commitment to education and social responsibility.

“This is a family event for us. Every year, this family continues to grow. When I see the students who come here, share their achievements and receive their awards, I am amazed by the number of challenges they have overcome. My father’s guidance has been instrumental in helping us continue this journey for so many years,” he said.

Highlighting Agaram Foundation’s work over the past two decades, Suriya said the organisation had reached approximately 7,000 people, including families of first-generation learners.

He emphasised that educational inequality continues to affect students in remote hill villages, fishing communities and other underserved regions. He also spoke about the importance of identifying students who need support and taking educational opportunities to them rather than waiting for them to seek help.

Suriya then shared three important lessons he had learnt from his experience in the film industry.

1. One More – Never Give Up

Explaining the concept of retakes in filmmaking, Suriya said that a scene is often filmed several times before achieving the desired result.

“Whenever something goes wrong, the director does not say that you have failed. Instead, he says, ‘One more.’ I look at life in the same way. Life never tells you that you have failed. You may think so, but that is not the end. Always tell yourself that you can try one more time,” he said.

Whether it is achieving better marks, securing a college seat or getting a first job, he encouraged students not to consider a setback their final destination.

“If you are not satisfied with the result, remember that it is not the end. You can try again, take another opportunity and improve yourself. Always remember that there is one more chance,” he advised.

2. Rehearsal and Consistency Lead to Excellence

Suriya explained that even scenes lasting only a few minutes on screen often require hours of rehearsal and repeated practice.

He stressed that consistent effort is essential to mastering any skill, whether it is coding, drawing, sports or another area of interest.

“You do not have to be exceptionally talented from the very beginning. If you continue practising something you love with complete dedication, you can improve and excel in it. Rehearsal is what shapes you,” he said.

Sharing his own journey, he recalled that he did not know much about acting when he entered the film industry. He credited repeated practice and perseverance for helping him sustain his career over nearly three decades.

3. Recognise Those Who Help You Succeed and Help Others Rise

Suriya pointed out that the success of a film is never the achievement of a single individual. Writers, assistant directors, costume designers, makeup artists, drivers, light technicians and numerous other professionals contribute to the final outcome.

Drawing a parallel with life, he urged students to remember the people who supported them along the way.

“When you rise in life, do not forget the people who stood beside you and helped you reach where you are today. Once you reach a certain position, make an effort to help at least one other person rise. Your name should be associated with someone else’s success, too,” he said.

He also encouraged students to look beyond social media reels and explore podcasts, interviews and research about successful personalities to understand their journeys, struggles and achievements.

Concluding his address, Suriya reiterated the importance of perseverance, consistent practice and gratitude.

“Life is beautiful. Believe that you can achieve what you aspire to become. Always ask for one more chance, and try to help at least one other person move forward in life. My best wishes to all of you,” he said.

The 47th anniversary celebration served as a reminder that education is not merely a means of individual advancement but also a powerful force for uplifting families and communities.

Special guests, artists, students, Agaram Foundation volunteers and social activists participated in the event.
