Director Vignesh Shivan Serves Biryani to 5,000 People at Help on Hunger Foundation’s #ZEROHUNGER Initiative
World Food Day event highlights the importance of fighting hunger and supporting underprivileged communities
Chennai: For some, food is a matter of taste and choice, while for many others, securing even one meal a day remains a struggle. Emphasising the importance of addressing hunger and supporting the underprivileged, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan inaugurated a special food distribution drive organised by the volunteer organisation Help on Hunger Foundation under its #ZEROHUNGER initiative. The event saw biryani being prepared and served to 5,000 people.
Held at the Perambakkam Community Hall in the Chennai suburbs, the event was organised as part of the foundation’s annual World Food Day initiative. The programme aimed to bring relief to homeless people, those living on the streets, destitute individuals, senior citizens, people abandoned by their families, and other marginalised communities by providing them with freshly prepared, quality biryani.
A Humanitarian Initiative Driven by Compassion
For many people living on the margins of society, access to even a single nutritious meal is uncertain. Recognising this harsh reality, social activist Allan Samuel, along with his friends, founded Help on Hunger Foundation to support people struggling with hunger and deprivation.
The organisation’s volunteers prepare nutritious, hygienic and quality food and personally reach out to people in need, ensuring that meals reach those who need them the most.
For the past seven years, the foundation has been organising its World Food Day food distribution initiative. In previous editions, prominent personalities from the Tamil film industry, including director Lokesh Kanagaraj and actress Aishwarya Rajesh, have participated as special guests.
Continuing this tradition, director Vignesh Shivan attended this year’s event and served food to the beneficiaries, extending his support to the foundation’s humanitarian efforts.
“For Those Who Cannot Afford Even One Meal, Biryani Is a Rare Experience,” Says Vignesh Shivan
Speaking at the event, director Vignesh Shivan said:
“Today, for many of us, biryani has become a food option that we enjoy on holidays and special occasions. When I was in college, I used to skip biryani and eat only kuska because it was cheaper.
“But for people who cannot even afford one proper meal a day, eating biryani is something that rarely happens. When I learned about the initiative taken by this volunteer organisation to provide food to such people, I expressed my desire to be part of the event.
“It makes me happy to see poor and underprivileged people, homeless individuals, those living on the streets, senior citizens and the destitute benefit from this initiative. I consider it a matter of pride to have participated in this meaningful effort.”
The World Food Day initiative drew attention to the importance of food security and compassion, with biryani served to thousands of people in an effort to bring happiness and relief to those experiencing hunger.
Help on Hunger Foundation: Serving 400 People Every Day
With the guiding principle that no one should go hungry, Help on Hunger Foundation continues to serve communities through the collective efforts of volunteers from different professional backgrounds. The organisation primarily operates through small donations contributed by financially stable individuals who support its mission.
The foundation’s key initiatives include:
- Daily food distribution: Preparing meals for approximately 400 people every day and delivering them directly to their locations.
- Blanket distribution: For the past seven years, providing blankets to people who sleep on roadsides at night on pieces of paper and gunny sacks.
- Support during COVID-19: Reaching out to hungry and vulnerable people living on the streets and delivering food directly to them during the pandemic.
- Food for marginalised communities: Providing meals to people affected by leprosy.
- Safe drinking water initiatives: Working with government support to help provide safe drinking water at more than 200 Anganwadi nutrition centres in and around Madurantakam.
- Support for rural healthcare facilities: Assisting government initiatives to provide clean drinking water to rural primary health centres in villages beyond Madurantakam that lack adequate water facilities.
- Fundraising initiatives: Organising annual events featuring celebrities to mobilise resources and sustain the foundation’s charitable activities.
Beyond addressing hunger, Help on Hunger Foundation continues to identify and respond to the essential needs of vulnerable communities through various welfare initiatives.
The foundation’s efforts demonstrate that feeding the hungry is more than an act of charity—it is a meaningful step towards ensuring dignity, compassion and access to basic necessities for everyone.
The participation of director Vignesh Shivan in this year’s #ZEROHUNGER initiative added further encouragement to the foundation’s mission of building a society where no one goes hungry.
