After 400 Years, a Ration Shop Arrives in Vellagavi: ‘Gevi’ Team Celebrates a Milestone for the Hill Village
Kodaikanal: For generations, the residents of Vellagavi, a remote hill village near Kodaikanal, have struggled to access basic facilities, particularly proper road connectivity. In a significant development for the community, a government ration shop has reportedly been established in the village for the first time in its 400-year history. Celebrating this milestone, the team behind the Tamil film Gevi has brought the villagers’ story to life through a special song titled Malai Geetham (Hill Anthem).
Directed by Tamil Dayalan and produced by Artuptriangles Film Company, Gevi has reportedly entered the consideration ballot for the 98th Academy Awards. The film has drawn attention to the lives, challenges and struggles of people living in remote hill communities, bringing their stories to a wider audience.
The song Malai Geetham features the powerful vocals of renowned music director and singer Deva, popularly known as “Thenisai Thendral,” with lyrics penned by celebrated poet and lyricist Vairamuthu. More than just a musical number, the song highlights the everyday struggles of the people of Vellagavi and their long-standing fight for essential infrastructure and public services.
Speaking about the development, director Tamil Dayalan expressed his happiness over the arrival of the ration shop, while reiterating the village’s continuing demand for proper road connectivity.
“Our hearts are filled with gratitude. Our long-standing struggle has been to secure proper road facilities for the people of Vellagavi. Even as we continue to wait for that essential infrastructure, we are immensely happy that we have been able to bring a government ration shop to our village for the first time in its 400-year history.
“We hoped to get a proper road, but at least we have managed to bring a ration shop to our people. This is certainly a victory worth celebrating.
“It is a proud moment for me as a filmmaker to see the struggles of these simple hill-dwelling communities reach a global platform through the film’s reported entry into the Oscar consideration ballot. Having legendary personalities like Deva sir and Vairamuthu sir lend their voices and words to reflect our people’s pain and achievements makes this moment even more special,” he said.
While the film’s reported inclusion in the Oscar consideration ballot is an important milestone for its team, the arrival of the ration shop represents a tangible improvement in the daily lives of Vellagavi’s residents.
Gevi seeks to demonstrate how cinema can go beyond entertainment to highlight the needs of marginalised communities and bring their stories to the attention of the wider world. With the village still awaiting proper road connectivity, residents continue to hope that their long-pending demand will also be addressed.
For Vellagavi, the ration shop is more than a new public facility — it is a milestone in the community’s continuing journey towards better access to essential services.
Editorial note: The film’s reported inclusion in the Oscar consideration ballot and the establishment of the ration shop should be independently verified before publication. Inclusion in the consideration ballot does not mean that a film has received an official Oscar nomination.
