‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ Success: A Recognition of Aadhi’s Journey, Says Sundar C
Chennai: The success celebration of Meesaya Murukku 2, starring and directed by Aadhi, was held in Chennai, with director Sundar C, music composer Deva, Aadhi and members of the film’s team in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Sundar C expressed his happiness over Aadhi’s growth as an artist and filmmaker. Recalling Aadhi’s early days, he said it was a matter of pride to see the young musician who arrived in Chennai years ago for an independent song eventually build a strong fan following and establish himself in the Tamil film industry.
Sundar C also recalled the making of the first Meesaya Murukku, saying that neither he nor Aadhi initially expected the film to develop such a strong following. According to him, the film began as an attempt by Aadhi to document his own experiences and share the struggles he faced as an independent artist.
He said the idea for Meesaya Murukku 2 also began on a small scale. Aadhi initially developed a story centred around three generations and later explored the lives and struggles of gaana musicians in Chennai. As part of his research, Aadhi met several gaana artists personally and learnt about their experiences and challenges.
Sundar C said Aadhi was given complete creative freedom while making the film. He also praised Aadhi’s attention to detail, revealing that even when he watched an early rough version of the film, with only around half the work completed, he was impressed by its emotional impact.
The producer further noted that the film has been receiving a response not only in Tamil Nadu but also in other parts of India and overseas, including Australia, Malaysia, Europe and the United States.
Deva recalls the roots of Gaana music
Music composer Deva, who also attended the event, spoke about the origins of gaana music and its journey into mainstream cinema.
According to Deva, gaana is essentially a folk music form rooted in the streets and everyday life of Chennai. He recalled growing up listening to such songs and said that the music existed among people long before it acquired the name ‘gaana’.
Deva said he began using the term ‘gaana’ to identify this particular Chennai-based folk tradition and worked towards bringing it into Tamil cinema.
Recalling the period when he entered the film industry, Deva said Ilaiyaraaja was at the peak of his career, followed by the emergence of A.R. Rahman. In such an environment, he felt the need to develop a distinct musical identity of his own, which led him to explore Chennai’s indigenous musical traditions.
He also expressed happiness that gaana music has now become widely popular among audiences and has secured a significant place in Tamil cinema.
Aadhi on creative freedom and his approach to filmmaking
Speaking at the event, Aadhi said the creative freedom extended to him played a crucial role in the making of Meesaya Murukku 2.
He recalled that Sundar C never dictated how the film should be made or how the screenplay should be structured. Instead, he simply encouraged Aadhi to proceed with what he believed was right.
Aadhi said his approach to filmmaking is less about following a fixed formula and more about creating a particular emotion or ‘vibe’ for the audience. His aim, he said, is to ensure that people who come to watch his films can forget their worries for a couple of hours and leave the theatre with a positive feeling.
He also revealed that the title Meesaya Murukku 2 was finalised after an interesting interaction with a fan named Kishore, who asked Aadhi during a concert when the sequel would arrive.
Aadhi said the response to the film had given him greater clarity about the kind of cinematic experience he wants to create, particularly the energy and excitement he sees among audiences at his musical performances.
He also thanked his assistant directors and young technicians, stressing the importance of giving newcomers opportunities. According to Aadhi, providing the right platform can help emerging talents eventually grow beyond those who gave them their first opportunity.
The success celebration concluded with Aadhi acknowledging the support of Sundar C, the producers, technicians, collaborators and fans, while describing the film’s reception as recognition not just for him but for everyone who trusted him and gave him the freedom to create.
