Mersal Film Loan Dispute: Madras High Court Dismisses Sun TV’s Claim, Major Legal Victory for Sripriya’s Marina Holdings
Chennai: In a significant development in the loan dispute linked to the Tamil film Mersal, the Madras High Court has ruled in favour of Marina Holdings, a company associated with actress Sripriya and her husband, Rajkumar Sethupathy. The court dismissed a claim petition filed by Sun TV Network Limited seeking relief concerning two properties involved in the dispute.
Justice K. Kumaresh Babu passed the order on October 16, declining Sun TV Network’s request to remove the attachment imposed on the properties by the court.
Loan Dispute Linked to Mersal
Mersal, starring Vijay, was produced by N. Ramasamy, proprietor of Sri Thenandal Films. Marina Holdings had extended a loan in connection with the film’s production. However, the repayment of the entire outstanding amount reportedly became an issue.
According to Rajkumar Sethupathy, the original title deeds of two properties—his residence and office—were provided as security. He stated that the arrangement was made to obtain the No Objection Certificate (NOC) required for the film’s theatrical release.
Cheques Dishonoured, Legal Proceedings Followed
The cheques issued towards repayment of the outstanding amount were reportedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds in the bank account. Following this, Marina Holdings initiated legal proceedings to recover the amount due to the company.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, court proceedings resulted in the attachment of the two properties. Despite the attachment being in force, the properties were subsequently sold to Sun TV Network Limited, according to the details presented in the case.
Court Rejects Sun TV’s Claim
Sun TV Network Limited approached the Madras High Court seeking the removal of the attachment on the properties. The company contended that it had acquired the properties in good faith and claimed full ownership over them.
After considering the petition, Justice K. Kumaresh Babu dismissed Sun TV Network’s claim. The court also refused to lift the attachment imposed on the properties.
With this order, the existing court attachment on the two properties remains in force. The ruling marks a significant legal development in the long-running loan dispute connected to Mersal, providing a major legal win for Marina Holdings.
