‘The Valley of Health’ Documents a Medical Revolution in Sittilingi, Bringing New Hope to Tribal Communities

Director Sankara Narayanan’s documentary selected for the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) 2026

Healthcare is not merely about treating illnesses; it has the power to transform lives and reshape the future of entire communities. Highlighting this powerful message is The Valley of Health, a documentary directed by filmmaker and writer Sankara Narayanan, which chronicles an extraordinary medical and social transformation in the remote Sittilingi Valley of Tamil Nadu.

The documentary has been officially selected for the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) 2026, bringing international attention to a remarkable story of healthcare, community participation and social change.

The film captures the struggles faced by tribal communities in Sittilingi during the 1990s, when access to basic medical facilities was limited. It explores how a pioneering healthcare initiative transformed their lives and helped build a stronger, healthier community.

A Healthcare Initiative That Changed Lives

During the 1990s, tribal communities living in Sittilingi Valley faced significant challenges due to inadequate medical facilities and limited access to healthcare. The difficulties in obtaining timely medical assistance had a profound impact on their everyday lives.

Against this backdrop, two doctors arrived in the region and established the Tribal Health Initiative (THI) in 1993. What began as a modest medical initiative gradually grew into a community-oriented organisation providing healthcare services to more than 25 villages.

Beyond bringing medical assistance closer to people, the initiative contributed to improving their quality of life and creating lasting social change. The Valley of Health documents this remarkable journey, highlighting the transformation experienced by multiple generations and demonstrating the impact of collective community efforts.

Giving Visibility to Overlooked Stories

The documentary sheds light on the everyday realities of tribal communities, the barriers they face in accessing healthcare and the importance of community participation in creating sustainable change.

Rather than merely highlighting existing problems, the film also explores how communities can actively participate in developing solutions. At a time when healthcare is becoming increasingly commercialised, The Valley of Health presents an alternative perspective rooted in compassion, dignity and social responsibility.

Through the story of Sittilingi, the documentary delivers a universal message about the importance of making healthcare accessible to everyone, irrespective of their geographical or social circumstances.

Director Sankara Narayanan on the Film

Speaking about the inspiration behind the documentary, director Sankara Narayanan said that he had always been interested in bringing the challenges faced by tribal communities to wider public attention.

“I have always been interested in bringing the challenges faced by tribal communities into the spotlight. I wanted the world to understand the difficulties they experience due to inadequate medical facilities and the barriers they encounter while trying to access healthcare.

“At a time when medicine is becoming increasingly commercialised, the story of a valley where people came forward to find solutions to their own problems offers a much-needed alternative perspective. The film addresses an issue that concerns everyone. At the same time, it does not simply point out what is wrong; it also presents solutions. This was one of the key reasons that inspired me to choose this story.

“I am grateful to my wife and family for supporting me throughout this journey. Many people who have watched the film have appreciated it, and their encouragement has strengthened my sense of responsibility. It has also reinforced my determination to bring more such stories to the attention of the world,” he said.

A Story of Humanity, Hope and Sustainable Change

The Valley of Health is more than a documentary about a healthcare initiative. It explores what becomes possible when a community is given the opportunity, confidence and support to participate in transforming its own circumstances.

The journey of Sittilingi demonstrates that meaningful social change does not always happen overnight. Sometimes, it begins quietly, through compassion, commitment and people coming together to care for one another.

By bringing an often-overlooked community and its inspiring journey into the spotlight, The Valley of Health offers a compelling account of how healthcare initiatives rooted in humanity and community participation can create lasting change. Its official selection for the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) 2026 marks an important milestone for this story of resilience, collective effort and hope.
