எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் இசைப் பயணம் புதிய தலைமுறையை சென்றடைய வேண்டும்

எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் வாழ்க்கையை மையமாகக் கொண்டு உருவாகும் திரைப்படத்தின் தொடக்க நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலந்து கொண்டு பேசிய கமல்ஹாசன், தனது வாழ்க்கைப் பயணத்திலும் இசை முக்கியமான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியதாகக் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“இளமைப் பருவத்தில் தொடர்ந்து படிப்பில் ஈடுபட முடியாத சூழல் எனக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. அந்த இடைவெளி, இசையைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளும் ஒரு வாய்ப்பாக அமைந்தது. அதன் பின்னர் நடனம் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். உதவி நடன இயக்குநராகவும், பின்னர் உதவி இயக்குநராகவும் பணியாற்றி திரைப்படத் துறையில் எனது பயணத்தைத் தொடங்கினேன்.

திரைப்படத் துறையில் முதன்முதலில் கைதட்டல் பலகை அடித்த காலத்திலிருந்து, இப்போது மீண்டும் அதே பணியைச் செய்யும் நிலைக்கு வந்திருப்பது என் வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு அழகான சுற்றுப்பயணம் போன்றது” என்றார்.

தமிழ் திரையுலகின் முன்னோடிகளில் ஒருவரான எல்.வி. பிரசாத் போன்ற கலைஞர்களிடம் பணியாற்ற வேண்டும் என்ற தனது விருப்பத்தையும் கமல்ஹாசன் நினைவுகூர்ந்தார்.

“வயது முதிர்ந்த நிலையிலும் கலை மீது கொண்டிருந்த அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் எல்.வி. பிரசாத் செயல்பட்ட விதம் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது. அத்தகைய கலைஞர்களிடமிருந்து கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் எனக்குள் எப்போதும் இருந்தது” என்று அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் கலைச் சிறப்பை எடுத்துரைத்த கமல்ஹாசன், அவர் ஒரு பாடகி மட்டுமல்ல; இந்தியாவின் பல்வேறு மொழிகளையும் இசையின் மூலம் இணைத்த மகத்தான கலைஞர் என்றும் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், இந்தி, சமஸ்கிருதம் உள்ளிட்ட பல மொழிகளில் எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி பாடியிருக்கிறார். ஒவ்வொரு மொழியையும் உரிய உச்சரிப்புடன் கையாண்ட விதம் இன்றைய தலைமுறைக்கு ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய பாடம்.

அவர் பாடிய பக்திப் பாடல்கள் பல தலைமுறைகளாக மக்களின் வீடுகளிலும் கோயில்களிலும் தொடர்ந்து ஒலித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. ஒரு கலைஞரின் குரல் ஒரு தலைமுறையைத் தாண்டி அடுத்த தலைமுறையையும் சென்றடைவதே அவரது கலைச் சாதனையின் மிகப்பெரிய அடையாளம்” என்றார்.

எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியுடன் நேரடியாகப் பணியாற்றும் வாய்ப்பு தனக்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை என்றாலும், அவரை ரசிகராகக் கண்டு ரசித்த அனுபவம் தனக்கு மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியையும் பெருமையையும் அளித்ததாக கமல்ஹாசன் கூறினார்.

“எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி, டி.கே. பட்டம்மாள், எம்.எல். வசந்தகுமாரி ஆகிய மூன்று இசை மேதைகளின் அருகாமையைப் பெற்றது என் வாழ்க்கையின் பெருமைக்குரிய தருணங்களில் ஒன்று. இந்த மூன்று மகத்தான கலைஞர்களின் தாக்கம் என் வாழ்க்கையில் இருக்கிறது.

அவர்களைப் பற்றிய ஒரு திரைப்படத்தில் பங்கேற்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்திருப்பதை மிகுந்த மரியாதையுடன் ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறேன்” என்று தெரிவித்தார்.

திரைப்படத்தின் இயக்குநர் கவுதம் வாசுதேவ் மேனன் மற்றும் இசையமைப்பாளர் அனிருத் ஆகியோருக்கும் இந்தப் படத்தில் முக்கியமான பொறுப்பு இருப்பதாக கமல்ஹாசன் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“இந்தத் திரைப்படம் அனிருத்தின் இசைப் பயணத்திலும் ஒரு புதிய திருப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் என்று நம்புகிறேன். அதேபோல், இயக்குநர் கவுதம் வாசுதேவ் மேனனுக்கும் இந்தப் படத்தின் மூலம் ஒரு முக்கியமான கலைப் பொறுப்பு கிடைத்திருக்கிறது” என்றார்.

எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் வாழ்க்கையை வெறும் புகழ்பாடாக மட்டும் திரைப்படத்தில் பதிவு செய்யாமல், அவர் வாழ்ந்த விதத்தையும், கலை மீது கொண்டிருந்த அர்ப்பணிப்பையும் இயல்பாக வெளிப்படுத்த வேண்டும் என்றும் கமல்ஹாசன் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

“எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் வாழ்க்கையே ஏற்கெனவே ஒரு மிகச் சிறந்த கதை. எனவே, அதில் தேவையற்ற நாடகத்தன்மையைச் சேர்க்காமல், அவரது வாழ்க்கையை உண்மைக்கு நெருக்கமாகப் படைக்க வேண்டும். அவரது கலை மீதான அர்ப்பணிப்பையும், மனிதராக அவர் வாழ்ந்த விதத்தையும் இயல்பாகக் காட்ட வேண்டும்” என்று அவர் வலியுறுத்தினார்.

மேலும், தென்னிந்திய திரையுலகைச் சேர்ந்த கலைஞர்கள் மொழி வேறுபாடுகளைத் தாண்டி ஒரே குடும்பமாக இணைந்து செயல்பட வேண்டிய காலம் வந்துவிட்டதாகவும் கமல்ஹாசன் தெரிவித்தார்.

“சென்னை, பெங்களூரு, ஐதராபாத் உள்ளிட்ட நகரங்கள் தனித்தனி திரையுலக மையங்களாக மட்டும் இல்லாமல், ஒன்றோடொன்று இணைந்த கலைத் தளங்களாக வளர வேண்டும். ஒரு மொழியில் உருவாகும் சிறந்த படைப்பை மற்ற மொழி மக்களும் நேரடியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் சூழல் உருவாக வேண்டும்.

எதிர்காலத்தில் திரைப்படங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள மொழிமாற்றத்தை மட்டுமே நம்பியிருக்க வேண்டிய நிலை குறைய வேண்டும். கலைக்கு மொழி எல்லைகள் கிடையாது” என்றார்.

இசைக்கு மொழி, சாதி, பிரிவு என எந்த எல்லையும் இல்லை என்றும், அது அனைவரையும் இணைக்கும் சக்தி கொண்டது என்றும் கமல்ஹாசன் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் இசைப் பயணமே இதற்கு மிகச் சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு. அவரது குரல் பல மொழிகளைக் கடந்து மக்களை இணைத்தது. அந்த ஒற்றுமை உணர்வை இந்தத் திரைப்படமும் புதிய தலைமுறையினரிடம் கொண்டு சேர்க்க வேண்டும்.

இந்தப் படம் தமிழர்களுக்கான பெருமையாக மட்டும் இல்லாமல், இந்தியா முழுவதற்குமான பெருமையாக அமைய வேண்டும். கலைக்கு எல்லைகள் இல்லை என்பதை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை உணர்த்தும் படைப்பாக இது உருவாக வேண்டும்” என்று அவர் வாழ்த்தினார்.

“நான் எந்த ஒரு மொழியைச் சேர்ந்தவன் என்று மட்டும் சொல்லிக்கொள்ள விரும்பவில்லை; நான் ஓர் இந்தியன்” என்ற தனது கருத்தையும் கமல்ஹாசன் வலியுறுத்தினார்.

“எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமியின் இசை ஏற்படுத்திய ஒற்றுமை உணர்வை இந்தத் திரைப்படமும் மக்களிடம் கொண்டு சேர்க்க வேண்டும். அவரது இசைப் பயணம் புதிய தலைமுறையினருக்கும் தொடர்ந்து உத்வேகமாக இருக்க வேண்டும்” என்று கமல்ஹாசன் தெரிவித்தார்.

MS Subbulakshmi’s Musical Journey Must Reach the New Generation, Says Kamal Haasan

The life, music and artistic journey of legendary singer MS Subbulakshmi should be taken to the new generation through cinema, while also highlighting the cultural unity of South India, actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan said.

Speaking at the launch event of an upcoming film based on the life of MS Subbulakshmi, Kamal Haasan said music had played an important role in shaping his own artistic journey.

Recalling his early years, he said there was a phase when he was unable to continue his education as planned. “That gap in my life gave me an opportunity to understand music. I subsequently learnt dance and began my journey in the film industry by working as an assistant dance choreographer and later as an assistant director,” he said.

Kamal Haasan also described his journey in the film industry as a “beautiful full circle”, recalling that he had started by working with a clapboard and was now returning to the same responsibility.

He recalled his admiration for legendary filmmaker L. V. Prasad and his desire to work with pioneers of the Tamil film industry. He said Prasad’s dedication to cinema even in his later years had left a deep impression on him.

Speaking about MS Subbulakshmi, Kamal Haasan said she was not merely a singer but an artist who connected different parts of India through music.

“MS Subbulakshmi sang in several languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Sanskrit. The way she handled the pronunciation and nuances of each language remains a lesson for the present generation,” he said.

He pointed out that many of the devotional songs rendered by MS Subbulakshmi have continued to be heard in homes and temples across generations.

“The fact that her voice has travelled beyond one generation and continues to reach another is a testament to the greatness of her artistic achievement,” Kamal Haasan said.

Although he did not have the opportunity to work directly with MS Subbulakshmi, Kamal Haasan said watching her as a fan had itself been a memorable experience.

He also recalled the privilege of being around three legendary musicians — MS Subbulakshmi, DK Pattammal and ML Vasanthakumari — and said their influence had remained an important part of his life.

“I consider it a great honour to be part of a film about such legendary artists,” he said.

Kamal Haasan also highlighted the responsibilities of director Gautham Vasudev Menon and composer Anirudh in bringing the project to the screen.

He expressed hope that the film would mark a significant new phase in Anirudh’s musical journey as well.

Kamal Haasan urged the filmmakers to portray MS Subbulakshmi’s life with honesty and restraint rather than turning it into a mere celebration of her achievements.

“Her life is already a great story. There is no need to add unnecessary drama to it. Her way of life and her dedication to art should be portrayed naturally and as close to reality as possible,” he said.

He also stressed the need for artists from the South Indian film industries to work together beyond linguistic boundaries.

“Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad should not merely remain separate film centres. They should grow as interconnected cultural and artistic platforms,” he said.

Kamal Haasan said the need for films to be translated for audiences across languages could gradually reduce as people increasingly embrace good cinema irrespective of the language in which it is made.

“Art has no boundaries of language, caste or division. Music, in particular, has the power to bring people together. MS Subbulakshmi’s musical journey is perhaps the finest example of this,” he said.

He expressed hope that the film would become a source of pride not only for Tamil people but for the entire country.

“I do not want to identify myself only with one language; I am an Indian,” Kamal Haasan said, stressing that the sense of unity created by MS Subbulakshmi’s music should also reach audiences through the film.

He concluded by expressing the hope that the film would introduce MS Subbulakshmi’s extraordinary musical legacy to a new generation and once again demonstrate that art has no boundaries.
