R.M. Veerappan: A Legacy of Political Grace and Cinematic Success Remembered at Centenary Celebration
Chennai: Politics and cinema may be two very different worlds, but R.M. Veerappan carved out a distinctive place for himself in both. Known for his political acumen, personal discipline and commitment to public life, he was equally recognised for his contribution to Tamil cinema as a producer and screenwriter.
His centenary celebration, held at Vani Mahal in T. Nagar, Chennai, brought together prominent personalities from politics, cinema, education and the judiciary, who recalled the life, career and enduring legacy of the former Tamil Nadu minister.
Rather than being just a commemorative event, the gathering became an occasion to revisit the many facets of R.M. Veerappan’s life — from his association with the Dravidian movement and his long political career to his influential journey in the film industry.
Veerappan had close associations with prominent Dravidian leaders, including Periyar and C.N. Annadurai. When M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) broke away from the DMK and founded the AIADMK, Veerappan joined him and continued his political journey alongside the legendary leader.
He went on to serve in the cabinets of both MGR and J. Jayalalithaa. Between 1977 and 1996, he served as a Tamil Nadu minister on five occasions. He was also a member of the Legislative Council three times and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice.
But Veerappan’s legacy extended far beyond politics.
A strategist who made his mark in cinema
Veerappan played a significant role in Tamil cinema and was involved in the production of more than 30 films across Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. He also wrote and developed screenplays for more than 20 successful films, earning him the affectionate title of ‘Thiraikkathai Sithar’ (master of screenwriting) in the film industry.
His association with MGR’s cinematic career was particularly significant. He produced films such as Rickshawkaran, Ulagam Sutrum Valibhan and Deiva Thaai, and remained one of the key figures who supported and strengthened MGR’s journey in cinema.
His contribution continued even as Tamil cinema entered a new generation. He was associated with several successful films featuring Rajinikanth, including Moondru Mugam and Baasha, further establishing his reputation as a producer with an eye for commercially successful cinema.
Political equations changed, actors changed and the nature of Tamil cinema evolved — but Veerappan continued to adapt while retaining his own distinct identity.
That legacy also found continuity through his son-in-law T.G. Thyagarajan, who has been carrying forward the family’s association with cinema through Sathya Jyothi Films.
Over the years, Sathya Jyothi Films has produced films featuring leading stars across generations, including MGR, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Dhanush and Vijay Sethupathi. The production house has built a reputation for combining commercial success with quality-oriented filmmaking.
In that sense, the centenary celebration also reflected how the cinematic legacy associated with Veerappan continues through the next generation.
Remembering the man behind the public figure
The event was organised under the leadership of T.G. Thyagarajan, who welcomed the distinguished guests and spoke about Veerappan’s political journey, contribution to cinema, personal qualities and principles.
Several speakers focused not merely on his achievements, but on the values that defined him.
Chennai Kamban Kazhagam president and MP Jagathrakshakan recalled Veerappan as a person of great integrity in politics. He said Veerappan always had a strong desire to do something meaningful for the people and noted that remembering him also brought a sense of loss because he was no longer among them.
Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute Chancellor Shanmugam recalled that Veerappan was known as a ‘political strategist’, but said his life represented something greater — an example of how a person should conduct himself.
Former Madras High Court judge Suresh Kumar highlighted Veerappan’s qualities of sacrifice, affection and personal discipline. He said that at a time when such values are increasingly overlooked, Veerappan stood out as someone who not only followed them in his own life but also influenced those around him.
He also urged the Tamil Nadu government to name the road where Veerappan lived after him.
Veteran filmmaker S.P. Muthuraman spoke about Veerappan’s approach to politics, observing that while political culture has changed significantly over the years, Veerappan was someone who conducted politics with dignity and civility.
His remarks reflected one of the central themes of the celebration — the need to remember not only what Veerappan achieved, but also how he conducted himself while achieving it.
Poet Muthulingam, filmmaker P. Vasu, MGR Kazhagam general secretary Ramalingam and former Union Minister Thirunavukkarasar were among the other prominent personalities who attended the event.
A legacy beyond positions and films
R.M. Veerappan’s life brought together two contrasting worlds — politics and cinema.
In politics, he was remembered for his discipline, integrity and sense of political decorum. In cinema, he was known for his production acumen, storytelling skills and association with some of the biggest stars and successful films of different generations.
His centenary celebration, therefore, was more than a tribute to a former minister or a successful film producer. It was a reminder of a different era in public life and cinema — and of a personality who managed to leave a lasting imprint on both.
For R.M. Veerappan, the real legacy may lie not merely in the positions he held or the films he produced, but in the values with which he travelled through both worlds.
