The Search for Tamil Hip-Hop’s Next Big Voice Begins! Arivu, Yogi B and Sean Roldan Join as Judges for ZEE5’s New Reality Show ‘Theekural’

Tamil hip-hop has been gaining significant popularity, with a new generation of independent artists using rap music to express their thoughts, personal experiences, social concerns and cultural identities. Giving these emerging talents a platform to showcase their skills, Tamil ZEE5 is all set to introduce its new rap reality show, ‘Theekural’.

Created in association with ZEE Music, the show aims to discover talented underground hip-hop artists who are yet to receive mainstream recognition. Rather than focusing only on established performers, ‘Theekural’ brings together promising new voices and gives them an opportunity to compete for recognition as the next generation of Tamil rap artists.

One of the biggest highlights of the show is its impressive judging panel, featuring popular Tamil rapper Arivu, hip-hop artist Yogi B and music composer Sean Roldan. The judges will evaluate contestants based on their lyrical strength, musical flow, creativity, stage presence and ability to connect with audiences.

The competition will kick off with a grand Cypher performance, introducing the contestants, their backgrounds and individual musical identities. As the show progresses, participants will face different theme-based challenges every week. They will have to create original performances while demonstrating their songwriting abilities, storytelling skills and stage confidence.

To make the competition more exciting, the show features unique elements such as the ‘Thee Meter’, which recognises outstanding performances, and the ‘Wall of Fame’, where the most impressive contestants earn a place. Those who fail to meet expectations will enter the Danger Zone and face elimination. Audience voting will also play an important role in determining the contestants’ journey.

Adding energy and momentum to the show, DJ/Big Bro will serve as the connecting force between the contestants and judges. From introducing weekly themes to guiding the competition through its most intense moments, the host will play a key role in keeping the show engaging.

Speaking about the show, judge Arivu highlighted that rap is much more than beats and lyrics. According to him, it is a powerful medium for expressing real-life experiences, sharing stories and reflecting on society. He also expressed his interest in seeing artists who are willing to experiment, challenge themselves and develop an authentic musical identity.

Yogi B emphasised the cultural roots of hip-hop, recalling how the genre originated in the Bronx during the 1970s as a creative movement among Black and Latino communities. He believes that ‘Theekural’ will bring that spirit into Tamil rap by encouraging contestants to celebrate their individuality while respecting their cultural roots. He also expressed his expectations of artists who can combine lyrical depth, musical flow, stage presence and authenticity.

Music composer and judge Sean Roldan shared his excitement about witnessing how contestants interpret different themes and transform their ideas into original musical performances. He looks forward to seeing artists experiment with lyrics and music, explore different styles and develop their own distinctive sound.

With its focus on original compositions, creative challenges and emerging underground talent, ‘Theekural’ is expected to offer a fresh platform for Tamil hip-hop. More than just a reality competition, the show aims to bring deserving independent artists into the spotlight and introduce audiences to the voices shaping the future of Tamil rap.

‘Theekural’ will premiere exclusively on Tamil ZEE5 from October 5, 2026.
