அல்லு அரவிந்த், பென்னி வாசு ஆகியோருடன் இணைந்து பல ஆண்டுகளாக ஆய்வு செய்து, திட்டமிட்டு இந்தப் படத்தை உருவாக்கியதாக அவர் கூறினார்.

“M.S. Subbulakshmi Has Already Written the Script of Her Life” – Kamal Haasan at the Launch of M.S.: A Legacy on Screen

The life of legendary singer and Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi is set to come alive on the big screen with M.S.: A Legacy on Screen. The film was formally launched in Chennai at the iconic Music Academy, a venue that holds a special place in the musical journey of M.S. Subbulakshmi.

Actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan sounded the ceremonial clap to mark the beginning of the film.

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Gautham Tinnanuri, the film features Rashmika Mandanna in the role of M.S. Subbulakshmi. Music for the project will be composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

The film is being jointly produced by Allu Aravind, Rockline Venkatesh and Bunny Vasu under the banners of Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vasu Films.

The launch event brought together members of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s family, well-wishers, filmmakers and leading members of the Tamil film industry. As a tribute to the legendary musician, artistes also performed some of the timeless songs associated with her voice.

Gautham Tinnanuri: “Her humanity is as important as her achievements”

Speaking at the event, director Gautham Tinnanuri said that the film is not merely about documenting the achievements of one of India’s greatest musicians.

He recalled how M.S. Subbulakshmi, who was born and raised in Madurai in an environment steeped in music, went on to become an internationally recognised cultural icon.

According to the director, the Bharat Ratna, her legendary concerts and her achievements were only one part of her extraordinary journey. Her humanity, sacrifices, devotion and determination were equally significant.

“She was a daughter, singer, actress, woman and artiste, with many dimensions to her personality. Her life also carries powerful messages for the generations that follow,” he said.

Gautham added that the entire team approached the project with immense respect and affection for M.S. Subbulakshmi and promised to sincerely bring her dedication and devotion to the screen.

Madan Karky: “Her life deserves to be told”

Lyricist Madan Karky said that making a film on M.S. Subbulakshmi’s life had been a long-standing dream for many people.

He recalled that his mother had once interviewed M.S. Subbulakshmi for Kumudam magazine when he was a child, giving him an opportunity to see the legendary singer in person.

It was only years later, while working on music projects and learning more about her life, that he began to understand the magnitude of her journey.

Karky said reading Gautham Tinnanuri’s screenplay made him realise how much M.S. Subbulakshmi had overcome to reach the heights she eventually achieved.

He also pointed out that everyone involved in the film faces a unique challenge.

For Gautham, it is the responsibility of translating the life of an iconic personality to cinema. For Anirudh, it is about creating music that connects with today’s generation while respecting the musical legacy of M.S. Subbulakshmi. For Rashmika, the challenge is to completely transform herself into a personality who has been deeply etched in the memories of generations.

Rockline Venkatesh: “This journey began seven years ago”

Producer Rockline Venkatesh revealed that efforts to bring M.S. Subbulakshmi’s life to the screen had been underway for nearly seven to eight years.

He said that he, Allu Aravind and Bunny Vasu had spent years researching and developing the project before arriving at the current version.

According to Venkatesh, several people had previously hoped to make a film on M.S. Subbulakshmi, but the project eventually came together with the support of her family.

He also spoke about the process of choosing Gautham Tinnanuri as director and Rashmika Mandanna for the lead role.

Venkatesh said that finding the right actress to portray M.S. Subbulakshmi was not an easy decision, but Rashmika readily accepted the opportunity when approached.

He stressed that the support and cooperation extended by M.S. Subbulakshmi’s family members have been central to bringing the project to life.

Kalaipuli S. Thanu: “Watch Meera to understand her”

Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu welcomed the ambitious project and recalled the unparalleled place M.S. Subbulakshmi occupies in Indian music.

He suggested that the team revisit her iconic film Meera to study her mannerisms, costumes, body language and screen presence while preparing for the new film.

Thanu also spoke about the responsibility before Anirudh, noting that composing music for a film about M.S. Subbulakshmi would be a unique challenge.

Samuthirakani: “Her story is big enough for several films”

Actor Samuthirakani said that M.S. Subbulakshmi’s life contains enough material to potentially span several films.

He recalled his conversations with Gautham Tinnanuri about the legendary singer and said the number of stories and experiences from her life left a deep impression on him.

He expressed his hope that M.S.: A Legacy on Screen would become an important historical record of her extraordinary journey.

Allu Aravind: “It feels like M.S. Amma chose us”

Producer Allu Aravind said that the project feels much more personal than simply making a biographical film.

He recalled seeing a huge photograph of M.S. Subbulakshmi at the Music Academy before the event and said the moment made him feel as though she herself had chosen the team to tell her story.

Aravind explained that the film is not being made simply because M.S. Subbulakshmi was a legendary singer and musician. Her life contained many lesser-known experiences, particularly from her younger years, that deserve to be explored.

He also explained why Anirudh was chosen as the composer.

According to Aravind, Anirudh has the ability to connect today’s younger audience with the musical sensibilities of earlier generations. At the same time, the film will not attempt to simply recreate M.S. Subbulakshmi’s music.

“Her music cannot simply be recreated. It is something that belongs to a different level,” he said.

Rashmika Mandanna: “I feel only gratitude”

Rashmika Mandanna described the opportunity to portray M.S. Subbulakshmi as a deeply emotional responsibility.

She expressed gratitude to M.S. Subbulakshmi and said she hoped that the legendary singer would somehow be present in spirit at the event and watch over the team.

Rashmika also acknowledged the magnitude of the role and sought the blessings of M.S. Subbulakshmi, her family and her well-wishers.

“I promise to give my very best to this creation,” she said.

Kamal Haasan: “She was the voice of South India”

Kamal Haasan, who launched the film, shared several personal memories and reflections about M.S. Subbulakshmi.

Speaking about his own early journey in cinema, he recalled moving through acting, music, dance and filmmaking before finding his place in the industry.

He said M.S. Subbulakshmi represented the unifying power of music and, in particular, the voice of South India.

He highlighted her command over Tamil, Sanskrit, Hindi and Telugu and praised her exceptional pronunciation across languages.

Kamal also recalled his desire to have M.S. Subbulakshmi sing for his film Hey Ram. Although that did not materialise due to her health at the time, he eventually recorded D.K. Pattammal for the film.

He said he had been fortunate to receive the blessings of three iconic women of Indian music—M.S. Subbulakshmi, D.K. Pattammal and M.L. Vasanthakumari.

“Gautham doesn’t have to give his life for this film—he just has to work hard”

Kamal Haasan also addressed the responsibility resting on director Gautham Tinnanuri.

He offered an unusual but memorable observation about the screenplay: according to him, the story of M.S. Subbulakshmi’s life itself provides the foundation for the film.

“The screenplay has already been written by M.S. Amma through the life she lived. The director only has to polish it,” he said.

Kamal stressed that the film should not portray M.S. Subbulakshmi merely as someone to be worshipped. Instead, it should capture the affection, love and admiration people had for her.

A new challenge for Anirudh and Rashmika

Kamal also spoke about the challenges facing Anirudh and Rashmika.

He said composing music for a film centred on M.S. Subbulakshmi could become a significant new chapter in Anirudh’s musical journey.
