பழம்பெரும் நடிகை செளகார் ஜானகி காலமானார்
94 வயதில் நிறைவுற்ற ஏழு தசாப்த கால திரைப்பயணம் – இந்தியத் திரையுலகம் அதிர்ச்சி
சென்னை, ஆகஸ்ட் 21, 2026: இந்தியத் திரையுலகின் பழம்பெரும் நடிகையும், பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது பெற்ற மூத்த கலைஞருமான செளகார் ஜானகி அவர்கள் இன்று (ஆகஸ்ட் 21) பிற்பகல் 1.59 மணியளவில் காலமானார். அவருக்கு வயது 94. அவரது மறைவு தமிழ் திரையுலகம் மட்டுமின்றி தென்னிந்தியத் திரையுலகிலும் பெரும் சோகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. நடிகர் சங்கத் தலைவர் நாசர், செளகார் ஜானகி அவர்களின் மறைவை உறுதிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.
சங்கரமஞ்சி ஜானகி என்ற இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட செளகார் ஜானகி, தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம் மற்றும் மலையாளம் உள்ளிட்ட தென்னிந்திய மொழித் திரைப்படங்களில் ஏழு தசாப்தங்களுக்கும் மேலாக தனது தனித்துவமான நடிப்பால் ரசிகர்களின் மனதில் நீங்கா இடம்பிடித்தவர்.
‘செளகார் ஜானகி’ என பெயர் பெற்றவர்
1950ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளியான தெலுங்குத் திரைப்படமான ‘ஷவுகாரு’ திரைப்படத்தின் மூலம் திரையுலகில் அறிமுகமானார். அந்தப் படத்தின் வெற்றியைத் தொடர்ந்து அவரது பெயருடன் ‘செளகார்’ என்ற அடைமொழி இணைந்து, பின்னாளில் அவர் ‘செளகார் ஜானகி’ என திரையுலகில் பிரபலமானார்.
1952ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளியான ‘வளையாபதி’ திரைப்படத்தின் மூலம் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் அறிமுகமான அவர், தொடர்ந்து கதாநாயகியாகவும், குணச்சித்திர நடிகையாகவும் பல்வேறு கதாபாத்திரங்களில் தனது அபாரமான நடிப்புத் திறனை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.
400-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட திரைப்படங்களில் நடிப்பு
ஏழு தசாப்தங்களுக்கும் மேலாக நீடித்த அவரது திரைப்பயணத்தில், தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், மலையாளம் உள்ளிட்ட மொழிகளில் 400-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட திரைப்படங்களில் நடித்துள்ளார்.
கதாநாயகி, தாய், பாட்டி, மூத்த பெண், சமூகப் பின்னணி கொண்ட கதாபாத்திரங்கள் என பல்வேறு பரிமாணங்களில் அவர் நடித்த கதாபாத்திரங்கள் ரசிகர்களிடையே பெரும் வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றன.
தமிழில் ‘பணம் படுத்தும் பாடு’, ‘புதிய பறவை’, ‘நீர்க்குமிழி’, ‘மகாகவி காளிதாஸ்’, ‘எதிர்நீச்சல்’, ‘இரு கோடுகள்’, ‘உயர்ந்த மனிதன்’, ‘காவியத் தலைவி’, ‘தில்லுமுல்லு’, ‘வெற்றி விழா’, ‘ஹே ராம்’ உள்ளிட்ட பல குறிப்பிடத்தக்க படங்களில் அவரது நடிப்பு பாராட்டப்பட்டது.
திரைப்படங்களைக் கடந்தும் மேடை நாடகங்களிலும் அவர் தனது பங்களிப்பை வழங்கியுள்ளார். ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மேடை நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் பங்கேற்றதுடன், தனது கலைப் பயணத்தின் ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் வானொலி கலைஞராகவும் பணியாற்றியுள்ளார்.
பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது
இந்தியக் கலை மற்றும் திரைத்துறைக்கு செளகார் ஜானகி ஆற்றிய நீண்டகால பங்களிப்பை கௌரவிக்கும் வகையில், 2022ஆம் ஆண்டு இந்திய அரசால் பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. இந்த விருது அவரது ஏழு தசாப்த கால கலைப்பணிக்கு கிடைத்த மிகப்பெரிய தேசிய அங்கீகாரங்களில் ஒன்றாக அமைந்தது.
இதுதவிர, தமிழக அரசின் கலைமாமணி, ஆந்திரப் பிரதேச அரசின் நந்தி விருதுகள் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு விருதுகள் மற்றும் வாழ்நாள் சாதனை விருதுகளையும் அவர் பெற்றுள்ளார்.
தலைமுறைகளை கடந்து நிலைத்த கலைஞர்
செளகார் ஜானகியின் திரைப்பயணம் ஒரு தலைமுறையுடன் முடிவடையாமல், பல தலைமுறை ரசிகர்களையும் சென்றடைந்தது. கதாநாயகியாக தனது பயணத்தைத் தொடங்கிய அவர், பின்னர் குணச்சித்திர நடிகையாகவும், மூத்த நடிகையாகவும் தொடர்ந்து திரைத்துறையில் தனது முத்திரையைப் பதித்தார்.
நடிகர்களாகவும் இயக்குநர்களாகவும் பல தலைமுறைகள் மாறியபோதிலும், செளகார் ஜானகியின் நடிப்புக்கான மரியாதையும், அவரது கலைப்பங்களிப்புக்கான அங்கீகாரமும் தொடர்ந்து நிலைத்திருந்தது.

மேலும், அவர்களுக்கு நான்கு கொள்ளுப்பேரக்குழந்தைகளும் உள்ளனர்.

செளகார் ஜானகியின் மறைவுச் செய்தி வெளியானதும் திரையுலகினர், ரசிகர்கள் மற்றும் பல்வேறு தரப்பினரும் ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.
அவரது உடல் பொதுமக்கள் மற்றும் திரையுலகினர் அஞ்சலி செலுத்துவதற்காக சென்னை தேனாம்பேட்டை செனடாப் சாலையில் மாலை 5 மணி முதல் வைக்கப்படும் என நடிகர் சங்கத் தலைவர் நாசர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

Chennai, August 21, 2026: Veteran actress and Padma Shri awardee Sowcar Janaki passed away today (August 21) at 1:59 PM at the age of 94. Her demise has left the Tamil film industry and the wider South Indian cinema fraternity in deep sorrow.
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, Sowcar Janaki was one of the most respected senior artistes in Indian cinema. With an illustrious career spanning more than seven decades, she acted in over 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, leaving an enduring mark through her versatile performances.
How Janaki Became Known as ‘Sowcar Janaki’
Sowcar Janaki made her acting debut with the 1950 Telugu film ‘Shavukaru’. Following the success of the film, the name ‘Sowcar’ became permanently associated with her and she went on to be popularly known as Sowcar Janaki.
She subsequently made her mark in Tamil cinema and went on to portray a wide range of characters, both as a leading actress and as a character artiste.
A Career Spanning Over 400 Films
Across her remarkable seven-decade career, Sowcar Janaki acted in more than 400 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
From leading roles to powerful character parts, she effortlessly portrayed a wide variety of personalities. Her performances across different generations of cinema earned her immense respect from audiences and fellow artistes alike.
Some of her notable Tamil films include ‘Panam Paduthum Paadu’, ‘Puthiya Paravai’, ‘Neerkumizhi’, ‘Mahakavi Kalidas’, ‘Ethir Neechal’, ‘Iru Kodugal’, ‘Uyarndha Manithan’, ‘Kaviyathalaivi’, ‘Thillu Mullu’, ‘Vetri Vizha’ and ‘Hey Ram’, among several others.
Her contribution was not limited to cinema. She was also associated with theatre and participated in numerous stage productions during her illustrious career.
Honoured with Padma Shri
Recognising her distinguished and lifelong contribution to Indian art and cinema, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Sowcar Janaki in 2022.
The prestigious national honour was a fitting recognition of her immense contribution to Indian cinema and her extraordinary artistic journey spanning several decades.
She also received several other honours during her career, including the Kalaimamani award and recognition for her contributions to cinema and the performing arts.
An Artiste Who Transcended Generations
Sowcar Janaki’s contribution to Indian cinema went far beyond the number of films she acted in. Beginning her journey as a leading actress, she successfully transitioned into character roles and continued to remain an important presence on screen across generations.
Her ability to bring emotional depth, dignity and authenticity to every role made her a cherished artiste among audiences and filmmakers.

Sowcar Janaki was married to Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao.
The couple had three children:

She is survived by four grandchildren:
- Vaishnavi Aravind
- Dev Prasad Koty
- Dr. Sanjai Rao
- Rishi Sankaramanchi
She also has four great-grandchildren.

Following the news of her demise, condolences and tributes are being expressed by members of the film fraternity, fans and well-wishers.
Sowcar Janaki’s mortal remains will reportedly be kept at Senatop Road, Teynampet, Chennai, from 5 PM today for the public and members of the film fraternity to pay their last respects.
With her passing, Indian cinema has lost one of its most distinguished veteran artistes. Sowcar Janaki’s seven-decade legacy, memorable performances and immense contribution to Indian cinema will continue to live on across generations.
