டோரதி” எனது மனதுக்கு மிக நெருக்கமான படம் – இயக்குநர் கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ்

மதுரை மண், அங்குள்ள மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கைதான் “டொரதி” கதைக்கான அடித்தளம்: படத்தின் உருவாக்கம் குறித்து கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ் உருக்கமான பேச்சு

“டொரதி” திரைப்படத்தின் பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பில் பேசிய இயக்குநர் கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ், இப்படம் உருவான விதம், மதுரையுடனான தனது உறவு, படக்குழுவினரின் பங்களிப்பு மற்றும் நடிகர்களின் அர்ப்பணிப்பு குறித்து விரிவாகப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

தனது திரைப்படப் பயணத்திலும், “டொரதி” படத்தின் கதையிலும் மதுரைக்கு முக்கிய இடம் இருப்பதாக கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ் தெரிவித்தார். “நான் மதுரையில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தவன். எனக்குள் சினிமா மீதான காதலும் ஆர்வமும் உருவாக மதுரை மண்ணுக்கு மிகப்பெரிய பங்கு இருக்கிறது. மதுரையில் கோயிலுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக சினிமா முக்கியமான ஒன்றாக இருந்தது. சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே திரையரங்குகளுக்குச் சென்று திரைப்படங்களைப் பார்த்து வளர்ந்தேன். அந்தச் சூழலே என்னை ஒரு சினிமா ரசிகனாகவும், பின்னர் திரைப்பட இயக்குநராகவும் உருவாக்கியது,” என்றார்.

மேலும், மதுரையில் தான் பார்த்த மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கை, அவர்களுக்குள் இருந்த பாசம், கோபம், அன்பு, உறவுகள் மற்றும் பல்வேறு உணர்வுகளை சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே கவனித்து வந்ததாகக் கூறிய அவர், பின்னாளில் அந்த அனுபவங்கள் கதைகளாக மாறியதாகத் தெரிவித்தார்.

தனது முந்தைய படங்களான “இறைவி”, “ஜிகர்தண்டா” ஆகியவற்றின் உருவாக்கத்தையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்த கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ், “இறைவி” திரைப்படம் தனது வாழ்க்கையையும் தன்னைச் சுற்றியிருந்தவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையையும் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது என்றும், மனித உணர்வுகளுக்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமான கதையாக அது உருவானது என்றும் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

அதேபோன்ற மனித உணர்வுகளையும், தான் பார்த்து வளர்ந்த மக்களின் இயல்பான வாழ்க்கையையும் இன்னும் நெருக்கமாகப் பதிவு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில்தான் “டொரதி” கதை உருவானதாக அவர் கூறினார்.

“இந்தக் கதைக்கான எண்ணம் நீண்ட காலமாக என்னுள் இருந்தது. கொரோனா கால ஊரடங்கின்போது அதை முழுமையாக எழுதத் தொடங்கினேன். நான் வாழ்ந்த ஊர், நான் பார்த்த மனிதர்கள், அவர்களுடைய வாழ்க்கை முறைகள் என அனைத்தும் இந்தக் கதைக்குள் இயல்பாக வந்தன. அந்த வாழ்க்கையை நான் அப்படியே வாழ்ந்தவன் என்று சொல்ல முடியாது. ஆனால் அந்த மக்களை நீண்ட காலமாக கவனித்து, அவர்களுடன் பயணித்தவன். அந்த வாழ்க்கையின் உண்மைத்தன்மைதான் இந்தப் படத்தின் அடிப்படை,” என்றார்.

“மகான்”, “ஜிகர்தண்டா டபுள் எக்ஸ்”, “ரெட்ரோ” ஆகிய படங்களுக்குப் பிறகு “டொரதி”யை உருவாக்க முடிவு செய்ததாகவும், ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அடுத்ததாக எந்தப் பெரிய படமாக இருந்தாலும் பரவாயில்லை, முதலில் “டொரதி”யை முடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று உறுதியாக முடிவு செய்ததாகவும் அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

அந்த முடிவுக்குப் பிறகு இப்படத்திற்கான வாய்ப்புகள் எதிர்பாராத வகையில் அமைந்ததாகக் கூறிய கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ், தயாரிப்பாளர் குணீத் மற்றும் எலிபன்ட் பிக்சர்ஸ் நிறுவனம் இப்படத்தைத் தயாரிக்க முன்வந்ததை முக்கியமான தருணமாகக் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

படத்தின் தொழில்நுட்பக் குழுவினரின் பங்களிப்பையும் அவர் பாராட்டினார். லைவ் சவுண்ட் பணியில் குரியன் அளித்த பங்களிப்பு, சவுண்ட் டிசைனர் சுரேன், ஸ்டண்ட் மாஸ்டர்கள் ஷரீப் மற்றும் தினேஷ், எடிட்டிங் மற்றும் டிசைன் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்ட டியூனி, ஆடை வடிவமைப்பு உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு துறைகளைச் சேர்ந்த கலைஞர்கள் மிகுந்த அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் பணியாற்றியதாக தெரிவித்தார்.

குறிப்பாக, இசையமைப்பாளர் இளையராஜா இப்படத்தின் ஆன்மாவாக மாறியுள்ளார் என்று கூறிய கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ், இளையராஜா இப்படத்திற்கு இசையமைக்க ஒப்புக்கொண்டது மிகப்பெரிய ஆசீர்வாதம் என நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் தெரிவித்தார்.

“ராஜா சாருடன் பணியாற்றிய அந்த நாட்கள் என் வாழ்க்கையில் மறக்க முடியாத அனுபவம். அவர் இசையமைப்பதை அருகில் இருந்து பார்த்தது எனக்கு மிகப்பெரிய அனுபவம். ‘டொரதி’ படத்தின் இசை மற்றும் பின்னணி இசையைப் பார்க்கும்போது, அது எனக்கு தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் ஒரு சாதனையாகவே தோன்றுகிறது,” என்றார்.

நடிகர்கள் மற்றும் நடிகைகளின் பங்களிப்பையும் பாராட்டிய அவர், படத்தின் முன்னணி நடிகர்கள் தங்களது கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்காக மேற்கொண்ட உழைப்பை குறிப்பிட்டுப் பேசினார். அவர்கள் இருவரும் விரைவில் இந்தியத் திரையுலகில் பெரிய அளவில் கவனம் பெறுவார்கள் என்றும் அவர் நம்பிக்கை தெரிவித்தார்.

நடிகை கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ் குறித்து பேசிய கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ், “இந்தப் படத்திற்கு ஒரு திறமையான நடிகையும், அதே நேரத்தில் ஒரு நட்சத்திர மதிப்பும் தேவைப்பட்டது. கீர்த்தி சுரேஷிடம் கதையைச் சொன்னதும் உடனடியாக ஒப்புக்கொண்டார். தனது மற்ற படங்களின் தேதிகளையும் மாற்றி எங்களுடன் இணைந்து பணியாற்றினார். அவரது வருகை படத்திற்கு கூடுதல் மதிப்பைச் சேர்த்துள்ளது,” என்றார்.

மேலும், முத்து, சௌந்தர் உள்ளிட்ட நடிகர்களின் இயல்பான நடிப்பையும் அவர் பாராட்டினார். குறிப்பாக முத்துப்பாண்டி கதாபாத்திரம் படத்தைப் பார்த்த இளையராஜாவுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்ததாகவும், அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரம் குறித்து அவர் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் விசாரித்ததாகவும் கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ் தெரிவித்தார்.

படத்தின் கூடுதல் திரைக்கதைப் பணிகளில் எழுத்தாளர் ஷர்வணன் சந்திரன் அளித்த பங்களிப்பிற்கும் அவர் நன்றி தெரிவித்தார்.

மொத்தத்தில், “டொரதி” திரைப்படம் தனக்கு ஒரு சாதாரண திரைப்படம் அல்ல என்றும், மதுரை மண்ணில் தான் பார்த்து உணர்ந்த மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கை மற்றும் உணர்வுகளிலிருந்து உருவான மிகவும் நெருக்கமான படைப்பு என்றும் கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ் தனது உரையில் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“The People and Life I Witnessed in Madurai Became the Foundation for Dorothy,” Says Karthik Subbaraj

Speaking at the press meet of Dorothy, director Karthik Subbaraj opened up about the film’s origins, his deep connection with Madurai, the journey of the story, and the contribution of the cast and technical team.

Karthik Subbaraj revealed that Madurai has played a significant role in shaping both his passion for cinema and the storytelling behind Dorothy. “I was born and brought up in Madurai. The soil of Madurai has a major role in developing my love and passion for cinema. In Madurai, cinema was an important part of our lives. I grew up going to theatres and watching films, and that atmosphere shaped me as a film lover and eventually as a filmmaker,” he said.

He further explained that, from a young age, he closely observed the people around him, their relationships, emotions, conversations and way of life. These observations later became the foundation for many of his stories.

Recalling his earlier films such as Iraivi and Jigarthanda, Karthik Subbaraj said that Iraivi was particularly personal to him as it drew from his own life and the lives of people he had observed closely.

According to him, Dorothy carries that same emotional connection but goes even closer to the lives of ordinary people.

“The idea for this story had been growing inside me for a long time. I started writing it during the COVID-19 lockdown. The town where I grew up, the people I had observed and their way of life naturally became part of the story. I cannot say that I lived exactly the same life, but I have closely observed and lived alongside people whose lives were like this. That raw reality became the foundation of Dorothy,” he shared.

Karthik Subbaraj also revealed that after completing Mahaan, Jigarthanda Double X and Retro, he finally decided that Dorothy would be his next film, regardless of the scale or budget of the projects that came his way.

He described the journey of bringing the film to life as almost “magical”, particularly after he firmly decided to make it. He also spoke about meeting producer Guneet and how the production house came forward to back the film.

The director expressed his gratitude to the entire technical team for their dedication. He specifically appreciated Kurian for his contribution to the live sound work, along with sound designer Suren, stunt masters Sharif and Dinesh, and the other technicians who worked tirelessly to bring the film together.

A major highlight of his speech was his appreciation for legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, who has scored the music for Dorothy. Karthik Subbaraj described Ilaiyaraaja’s association with the film as one of its biggest blessings.

“Having Raja Sir compose for Dorothy is one of the biggest blessings the film could have received. The experience of sitting beside him and watching him work is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Seeing the film with his original score feels like a personal achievement for me,” he said.

Karthik Subbaraj also praised the performances of the lead actors and appreciated the commitment they showed throughout the making of the film. He expressed confidence that their talent and hard work would soon earn them wider recognition across the Indian film industry.

Speaking about Keerthy Suresh, who plays the film’s principal female character, the director said that he wanted an actor who could bring both star value and strong performance to the role.

“I told her that I was making a very independent film with a limited budget and that we would be shooting immediately. After reading the synopsis, she immediately agreed. She even adjusted the dates of her other commitments and joined us whenever we needed her. Her presence has added tremendous value to the film,” he said.

Karthik Subbaraj also praised actors Muthu, Sounder and Muthupandi for their natural performances. He particularly highlighted Muthupandi’s character, revealing that even Ilaiyaraaja had appreciated the character while watching the film.

He also thanked writer Sharvanan Chandran for his contribution as an additional screenwriter.

Concluding his speech, Karthik Subbaraj described Dorothy as much more than just another film in his career. For him, it is a deeply personal story rooted in the people, emotions and raw realities of the Madurai life he grew up observing.
