Tamil cinema has always had a strong connection with crime thrillers and suspense-driven stories. Adding a different flavour to the genre, The Dark Heaven has been crafted as a full-length suspense crime thriller rooted in folk lore, blending mystery, murder and investigation with the atmosphere of forests and mountains.

Directed by Balaji, who previously helmed D3, the film marks his second directorial venture. The cast includes Bigg Boss-fame actors Siddhu, Darshika and Ritwika, along with veteran performers Vela Ramamurthy, Nizhalgal Ravi, Jayakumar, Arul D Sankar, Sathya, Chaplin Balu, Gopal and others.

Produced by Godha Entertainment and MS Swiss Film Factory, the film has cinematography by Manikandan PK, editing by Raja Arumugam, music by Sakthi Balaji, and lyrics by Lavarthan.

A Thriller Shot Across Untouched Locations

One of the major highlights of The Dark Heaven is its locations. The team travelled across Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Courtallam, Mukkudal and Tenkasi, searching for unexplored locations that would complement the mysterious world of the story.

Several sequences were filmed in dense forest and mountainous regions, including locations that were difficult to access by vehicle. The team carried filming equipment over long distances to reach some of these challenging spots.

The filmmakers have attempted to make nature an integral part of the suspense-filled narrative, combining scenic beauty with an atmosphere of mystery and tension.

Pre-Release Event Held in Chennai

The pre-release introduction event of The Dark Heaven was held at Prasad Lab in Saligramam, Chennai, ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on September 18.

Speaking at the event, the film’s cast and crew shared their experiences of working on the project and the challenges they faced while bringing the thriller to life.

Sakthi Balaji: “This is my first crime thriller”

Music composer Sakthi Balaji revealed that although he had previously worked on films such as Udanpaal and Jackie, The Dark Heaven is his first experience composing music for a crime thriller.

He said that he was impressed by the intriguing one-line story narrated by director Balaji and found the opportunity to work on the film to be an unforgettable experience.

Sakthi Balaji also praised the performances of Siddhu, Ritwika and Darshika, while appreciating cinematographer Manikandan PK for capturing the film’s locations effectively.

He expressed confidence that the film would offer audiences an engaging theatrical experience and urged moviegoers to watch and support it in theatres.

Manikandan PK: “We searched for locations where beauty meets mystery”

Cinematographer Manikandan PK, who had previously worked with Balaji on D3, said The Dark Heaven marks their second collaboration.

He explained that shooting beautiful locations for a regular film is very different from filming a suspense thriller in the same kind of terrain.

According to him, the team carefully searched for locations that combined natural beauty with an eerie and mysterious atmosphere. The crew travelled through forests and mountains and even carried equipment to locations that vehicles could not reach.

He added that the difficulties faced during production no longer seemed significant when the final visuals received appreciation.

Darshika: “Thrillers have always been my favourite”

For Bigg Boss-fame actress Darshika, The Dark Heaven marks her first film.

Speaking at the event, she said she has always been fond of thriller films and believes The Dark Heaven will appeal to audiences who enjoy the genre.

She praised the film’s cinematography and music and appreciated the efforts of both the actors and technicians who worked hard to bring the project to the screen.

Darshika also requested audiences to watch the film in theatres on September 18 and share their honest opinions after watching it.

Ritwika: “This will not be another routine thriller”

Actress Ritwika said that the film’s release date had been changed several times due to the release schedules of bigger films, but The Dark Heaven is now set for a confirmed theatrical release on September 18.

Pointing out that several thrillers often revolve around familiar elements such as police officers, masked characters and investigations, she said The Dark Heaven would offer something different.

She highlighted the extensive effort put in by the entire team, particularly while filming in challenging locations. According to Ritwika, director Balaji would sometimes wait for three or four hours just to capture a single shot in the desired manner.

She also stressed the importance of experiencing films in theatres and expressed confidence that The Dark Heaven would provide audiences with a satisfying theatrical experience.

Director Balaji: “Restarting a film after completing most of it was a huge challenge”

Director Balaji opened up about the difficult journey behind The Dark Heaven.

He revealed that restarting the film after a significant portion had already been completed was an extremely challenging experience, both mentally and physically. He thanked Saran, Gopal and the entire filmmaking team for standing by him during the difficult phase.

Balaji particularly expressed his appreciation for Siddhu, saying that the actor never focused on the difficulties of the past and instead concentrated on taking the film forward.

He also recalled the demanding working conditions faced by the team, including days when they had barely three hours of sleep while continuing to work on the film.

The director praised the contributions of veteran actors Vela Ramamurthy, Nizhalgal Ravi and Jayakumar, along with Siddhu, Ritwika and Darshika.

Although he had previously appeared in smaller roles, Siddhu said he considers this opportunity a significant achievement. He is particularly happy to be making his lead debut with a police character in a thriller.

He revealed that when director Balaji narrated the story to him, he immediately found the concept interesting and agreed to be part of the project.

Siddhu said he deliberately chose not to dwell on the film’s earlier history or challenges. Instead, his focus was on using the opportunity effectively and helping take the film forward.

He also praised the dedication of the filmmaking team, particularly their willingness to travel through forests and mountains and work in difficult locations.
