ஒரு திரைப்படத்தை உருவாக்குவதற்கு இயக்குநர், நடிகர்கள், ஒளிப்பதிவாளர், படத்தொகுப்பாளர், தொழில்நுட்பக் கலைஞர்கள் என ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய குழுவே தேவைப்படும். ஆனால், ஒரு முழுமையான திரைப்படத்தின் உருவாக்கத்தில் இடம்பெறும் பல்வேறு பணிகளை ஒரே மனிதர் மேற்கொண்டு, பல கதாபாத்திரங்களிலும் அவரே நடித்து உருவாக்கியிருக்கும் திரைப்படம் என்ற வித்தியாசமான முயற்சியுடன் உருவாகியுள்ளது இயக்குநர் சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமாரின் ‘ONE MAN’.

‘வெங்காயம்’, ‘பயாஸ்கோப்’ உள்ளிட்ட படங்களின் மூலம் தனக்கென ஒரு தனித்துவமான பாதையை உருவாக்கியுள்ள சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார், தற்போது ‘ONE MAN’ திரைப்படத்தின் மூலம் சினிமா உருவாக்கத்தில் புதிய முயற்சியை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளார்.

வரும் 21-ஆம் தேதி உலகம் முழுவதும் திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகவுள்ள ‘ONE MAN’ திரைப்படத்தை விளம்பரப்படுத்தும் வகையில் சென்னையில் பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பு நடைபெற்றது. இதில் நடிகர் சத்யராஜ், இயக்குநர்கள் சேரன், லெனின் பாரதி, ஏ.ஆர்.கே. ராஜராஜா உள்ளிட்டோர் சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களாகக் கலந்து கொண்டு படக்குழுவினருக்கு வாழ்த்துகளைத் தெரிவித்தனர்.

“ஒரு வாய்ப்புக்காக காத்திருக்கவில்லை; வாய்ப்பையே உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறார்”

‘ONE MAN’ திரைப்படத்தின் உருவாக்கம் குறித்து இயக்குநர் சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் பேசுகையில், திரைப்படத்தின் அனைத்து பணிகளையும் நிறைவு செய்த பின்னர், அதை திரையரங்குகளுக்குக் கொண்டு செல்லும் முயற்சியில் தயாரிப்பாளர் கலைப்புலி எஸ். தாணுவை சந்தித்ததாகத் தெரிவித்தார்.

தன்னுடைய முயற்சியின் தன்மையைப் புரிந்துகொண்ட கலைப்புலி எஸ். தாணு, திரைப்படம் ரசிகர்களைச் சென்றடைய வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கில் பிவிஆர் நிறுவனத்திடம் பேசியதாகவும், பிவிஆர் நிறுவனமும் இந்த வித்தியாசமான முயற்சிக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்ததாகவும் அவர் கூறினார்.

“உலகில் யாரும் இதுபோன்ற முயற்சியை மேற்கொள்ளவில்லை. தமிழ்நாட்டில், தமிழராகிய நீங்கள் இப்படியொரு முயற்சியை மேற்கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். இதற்கு எங்களுடைய ஆதரவு உண்டு என்று பிவிஆர் நிறுவனம் தெரிவித்தது. அவர்களுக்கு என்னுடைய மனமார்ந்த நன்றி” என்றார் சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார்.

மேலும், படத்தின் படப்பிடிப்பு முடிந்த பின்னர் தொழில்நுட்பப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்வதற்காக இயக்குநர் ஏ.ஆர்.கே. ராஜராஜாவை அணுகியபோது, தனது முயற்சியைப் புரிந்துகொண்ட அவர், தன்னுடைய ஸ்டுடியோவையே பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ள அனுமதித்ததாகவும், எத்தனை மாதங்கள் வேண்டுமானாலும் அங்கு பணியாற்றலாம் என்று கூறியதாகவும் சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“முதலில் சந்தேகம் இருந்தது… படம் பார்த்த பிறகு பேச வார்த்தையே இல்லை”

இயக்குநர் ஏ.ஆர்.கே. ராஜராஜா பேசும்போது, ஒருவர் தனியாக ஒரு திரைப்படத்தை உருவாக்கி, அதில் அனைத்து கதாபாத்திரங்களிலும் நடிக்கிறார் என்ற தகவலைக் கேட்டபோது தனக்கும் மற்றவர்களைப் போல சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட்டதாகத் தெரிவித்தார்.

“ஆனால் அவர் பணியாற்றிய விதம் என்னை ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தியது. படப்பிடிப்புக்குப் பிந்தைய பணிகளையும் அவரே செய்தார். பின்னர் படத்தைப் பார்த்தபோது, ஒரு திரைப்படம் தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியாக எந்த அளவிற்கு சிறப்பாக உருவாக்கப்பட வேண்டுமோ, அந்தத் தரத்தில் படத்தை உருவாக்கியிருப்பது தெரியவந்தது.

ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கதாபாத்திரங்களில் அவரே நடித்திருக்கிறார். இது அவருடைய மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றி. நான், இயக்குநர் லெனின் பாரதி, சுப்பிரமணிய சிவா ஆகியோர் படத்தைப் பார்த்தோம். பார்த்து முடித்த பிறகு எங்களால் சுமார் பத்து நிமிடங்கள் பேசவே முடியவில்லை. அந்த அளவிற்கு ஆச்சரியமாக இருந்தது.

இயக்குநர் லெனின் பாரதி பேசுகையில், ‘ONE MAN’ தமிழ் சினிமாவிற்கு மட்டுமல்லாமல் இந்திய சினிமாவிற்கும் முக்கியமான முயற்சி என்று குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“இந்திய சினிமாவில் தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியாக மிகப்பெரிய படங்கள் ஏராளமாக வெளியாகியுள்ளன. ஆனால் அவற்றின் பின்னணியில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தொழில்நுட்பக் கலைஞர்கள், மிகப்பெரிய நிறுவனங்கள், பெரும் பொருளாதார முதலீடு என ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய அமைப்பு இருக்கும்.

ஆனால், அத்தகைய எந்தப் பின்னணியும் இல்லாமல், தனி மனிதராக ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய முயற்சியை மேற்கொண்டு சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் இந்தப் படத்தை உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறார். அதனால்தான் அவருடன் தொடர்ந்து பயணிக்கிறேன்.

மேலும், திரைப்படக் கல்லூரி மாணவர்களுக்கு ‘ONE MAN’ திரைப்படத்தைத் திரையிட்டுக் காண்பித்து, குறைந்த வளங்களைக் கொண்டு தொழில்நுட்பத்தை எவ்வாறு பயன்படுத்தி ஒரு திரைப்படத்தை உருவாக்க முடியும் என்பதை சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்றும், இதற்குத் தமிழக அரசு முன்வர வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர் கோரிக்கை விடுத்தார்.

இயக்குநர் சேரன் பேசுகையில், சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமாருடனான தனது நீண்டகால தொடர்பையும், அவரது படைப்புகளை தொடர்ந்து ஆதரித்து வருவதற்கான காரணத்தையும் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

‘வெங்காயம்’ திரைப்படத்தைப் பார்த்தபோது அதன் உள்ளடக்கமும், அதை உருவாக்கிய விதமும் தன்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்ததாகக் கூறிய சேரன், பின்னர் தனது அழைப்பின் பேரில் 50-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட இயக்குநர்கள் அந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்ததாகவும், அதன் மூலம் படத்திற்கு புதிய அடையாளம் கிடைத்ததாகவும் தெரிவித்தார்.

“திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகி ஓரிரு நாட்களிலேயே வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட ‘வெங்காயம்’, பின்னர் ‘சேரன் வழங்கும் வெங்காயம்’ என்ற பெயரில் மீண்டும் வெளியாகி வெற்றி பெற்றது. அதற்கு நல்ல வரவேற்பும் கிடைத்தது.

சினிமாவில் சம்பாதிப்பதற்காக மட்டும் ராஜ்குமார் வரவில்லை. ஒரு சாமானியனாலும் சினிமாவை உருவாக்க முடியும்; சாமானியர்களிடம் சினிமாவைக் கொண்டு செல்ல முடியும்; அவர்களையும் சினிமாவில் பயன்படுத்த முடியும் என்ற சிந்தனையுடன் அவர் பயணிக்கிறார்.

‘ONE MAN’ படத்தில் அவர் செய்திருக்கும் முயற்சி புதுமையானது மட்டுமல்ல; அதை சிறப்பாகவும் செய்திருக்கிறார். இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே நான் இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்துவிட்டேன். அதன் பிறகு பல்வேறு தொழில்நுட்பப் பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டு படத்தை மேலும் சிறப்பாகச் செதுக்கியிருக்கிறார்.

அனைத்து கதாபாத்திரங்களிலும் அவரே நடித்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால் எந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்திலும் ராஜ்குமார் தெரியவில்லை; அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரம்தான் தெரிகிறது. அந்த அளவிற்கு உழைத்திருக்கிறார். கிட்டத்தட்ட ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் உழைத்து இந்தப் படத்தை உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

மேலும், குறைந்த பட்ஜெட்டில் தரமான திரைப்படத்தை உருவாக்க முடியும் என்பதை சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் தொடர்ந்து நிரூபித்து வருவதாகவும், எதிர்காலத்தில் தமிழ் சினிமா அவரை நிச்சயம் கொண்டாடும் என்றும் சேரன் தெரிவித்தார்.

“சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமாருக்கு சினிமா மீது இருக்கும் காதல்தான் அவருடைய மிகப்பெரிய பலம். அவருடைய படைப்புகளுக்கு இன்றைய சூழலில் எதிர்பார்த்த அளவுக்கு அங்கீகாரம் கிடைக்காமல் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், இன்னும் பத்து அல்லது பதினைந்து ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு அவருடைய பெயரையும், அவரது படைப்புகளையும் தமிழ் சினிமா நிச்சயம் கொண்டாடும்.

நடிகர் சத்யராஜ் பேசுகையில், சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமாருடன் இணைந்து பணியாற்றியதற்கான பின்னணியையும், அவரது முயற்சி குறித்த தனது வியப்பையும் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

தந்தை பெரியாரின் கொள்கைகளுடன் சங்ககிரி ராஜ்குமார் கொண்டிருக்கும் தொடர்பையும், அவரைச் சந்திக்கச் சொன்ன கோவை ராமகிருஷ்ணனின் பரிந்துரையையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்த சத்யராஜ், பின்னர் ராஜ்குமாருடன் இணைந்து பணியாற்றிய அனுபவத்தைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

“125 படங்களில் நடித்த பிறகு ‘வில்லாதி வில்லன்’ என்ற படத்தை இயக்கினேன். அப்போதுதான் நடிப்பது எவ்வளவு சுகமானது என்பதை உணர்ந்தேன்.

ஆனால், ‘ONE MAN’ என்றால் என்ன? எல்லா வேலைகளையும் இவரே செய்திருக்கிறார் என்றால் அது எப்படி சாத்தியம்? எனக்கு இன்றும் அந்த ஆச்சரியம் இருக்கிறது.

‘வெங்காயம்’ படத்தைப் பார்த்து நான் பிரமித்திருக்கிறேன். அந்தப் படம் மீண்டும் வெளியாகி வெற்றி பெறுவதில் சேரனின் பங்களிப்பு மிகப்பெரியது. அவருடைய ‘பயாஸ்கோப்’ படத்தையும் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். அதுவும் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது.

இந்த ‘ONE MAN’ திரைப்படத்தை நான் மிகப்பெரிய சாதனையாகப் பார்க்கிறேன். ஊடக நண்பர்களிடம் நான் கெஞ்சிக் கேட்டுக்கொள்வது ஒன்றுதான் — இந்தப் படம் மக்களைச் சென்றடைய நீங்கள் பேருதவி செய்ய வேண்டும்.

இவர் வெற்றி பெற்றால்தான் இவரைப் போன்ற வித்தியாசமான முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் இன்னும் பல இளைஞர்கள் தமிழ் சினிமாவிற்கு வருவார்கள். இந்தப் படம் மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும்” என்று சத்யராஜ் வாழ்த்தினார்.

திரைப்படத்தைப் பார்த்த பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் மற்றும் ஊடக நண்பர்கள், ஒரே மனிதர் இத்தனை பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டு இப்படியொரு திரைப்படத்தை உருவாக்கியிருப்பது குறித்து வியப்பையும் பாராட்டையும் தெரிவித்தனர்.

One Man, Thousands of Characters: Sangagiri Rajkumar’s ‘ONE MAN’ Creates Buzz With an Extraordinary Filmmaking Experiment

What does it take to make a film? A director, actors, cinematographers, editors, technicians and a large production team are usually considered essential. But director, actor and filmmaker Sangagiri Rajkumar has attempted to challenge that conventional filmmaking process with ‘ONE MAN’, a film in which he has taken on several key responsibilities involved in filmmaking while also portraying numerous characters.

Known for films such as Vengayam and Bioscope, Sangagiri Rajkumar has now embarked on an unconventional cinematic journey with ONE MAN, which has been created as an ambitious one-man filmmaking experiment.

A press meet was held in Chennai to promote the film, which is scheduled to release worldwide in theatres on August 21. Actor Sathyaraj and directors Cheran, Lenin Bharathi and A.R.K. Rajaraja attended the event as special guests and extended their support to the film and its creator.

“I wanted to take this unique creation to theatres” – Sangagiri Rajkumar

Speaking at the event, Sangagiri Rajkumar revealed that after completing the various stages of production, he approached veteran producer Kalaippuli S. Thanu seeking guidance on bringing the film to theatres.

“I met Kalaippuli S. Thanu after completing all the work on the film. I requested his guidance on how to bring a creation like this, which is an unusual filmmaking achievement, to audiences in theatres. He immediately contacted PVR and spoke to them about the film.

“I explained to PVR that my wish was to ensure that this creation reaches audiences. They told me that nobody in the world had attempted something like this and that, as a Tamil filmmaker from Tamil Nadu, I had undertaken a unique effort. They assured me of their support. I sincerely thank PVR for standing by this film,” he said.

Rajkumar also recalled the support extended by director A.R.K. Rajaraja during the post-production process.

“After completing the shoot, I approached A.R.K. Rajaraja for the post-production work. He completely understood my vision and handed me the keys to his studio. He told me that I could work there whenever I wanted and for as many months as I needed. I am extremely grateful to him,” Rajkumar added.

Director A.R.K. Rajaraja admitted that he initially had doubts when he heard about Rajkumar’s ambitious plan.

“When someone says that one person is going to handle all the work of a film and also play all the characters, naturally, I too had questions like everyone else.

“But the way he worked surprised me. As he mentioned, I am also one of the people who can testify to his efforts. He personally handled all the post-production work.

“Later, I watched the film. He has created it with the kind of technical quality that a professionally made film demands. He has portrayed thousands of characters in the film, and that itself is his first major victory.

“Lenin Bharathi, Subramania Siva and I watched the film. After watching it, we were so stunned that we could not speak for nearly ten minutes.

“This can be described as the pinnacle of Indian talent. His hard work is something to be proud of. This is a historical record,” Rajaraja said.

He also urged audiences to watch ONE MAN in theatres and support the filmmaker’s unprecedented effort.

Director Lenin Bharathi described ONE MAN as an important film for Tamil cinema as well as Indian cinema.

“Indian cinema has witnessed several massive films that have achieved milestones in terms of technology. But such films usually have thousands of technicians working behind them, along with major production houses and substantial financial resources.

“Without any such large-scale backing, Sangagiri Rajkumar has undertaken this enormous effort as an individual. That is one of the reasons I continue to travel alongside him.

“Only someone who loves cinema passionately can attempt something like this. Rajkumar is not only someone who loves cinema; he is also an artist who wants to communicate something through cinema,” Lenin Bharathi said.

He also praised Rajkumar’s abilities as an actor and street-theatre performer, saying that his talent deserves to be utilised much more extensively in Tamil cinema.

Lenin Bharathi further suggested that ONE MAN should be screened for students at Tamil Nadu’s film institutions so that they can learn how technology can be creatively utilised to make films with limited resources.

He also urged the Tamil Nadu government to facilitate such screenings and interactions between Rajkumar and film students.

“He has proved that an ordinary person can make cinema” – Cheran

Director and actor Cheran spoke about his long association with Sangagiri Rajkumar and recalled how he first came across Vengayam.

“One day, actress Rohini called me and said that she had watched a film called Vengayam and that I should watch it because it was good. I watched it expecting it to be worthwhile because it was her recommendation, and I was impressed by the way the film conveyed its message strongly and naturally.

“Whenever I watch a good film, I usually share my thoughts about it. At that time, I started supporting Rajkumar just as many people had supported me when I needed it.

“More than 50 directors watched the film at my invitation, and eventually Vengayam found its own identity. A film that had been removed from theatres within a day or two of its initial release was later re-released as ‘Cheran Presents Vengayam’ and went on to receive a good response and strong collections,” Cheran recalled.

According to Cheran, Rajkumar’s filmmaking philosophy is rooted in the belief that cinema should not remain the exclusive domain of established names.

“He is not in cinema simply to make money. He believes that an ordinary person can make a film, that cinema can be taken to ordinary people and that ordinary people can also become part of cinema.

“His next film, Bioscope, was shaped by the experiences he gained while making Vengayam. He also has an excellent sense of humour, which is reflected in that film.

“With ONE MAN, he has gone even further. He has handled everything himself. The uniqueness of the attempt itself deserves to be celebrated, but what makes it more impressive is that he has executed the experiment effectively,” Cheran said.

Cheran revealed that he had watched ONE MAN nearly two years ago and that Rajkumar had subsequently continued working on the film and enhanced it technically.

“He has played every character in the film. But when you watch those characters, you do not see Rajkumar; you see the character. That is how intensely he has worked. He has spent nearly five years creating this film.

“His hard work is what will define him. He has also made another film titled Nedumba, which I believe will also achieve great success.

“Rajkumar has proved that a good Tamil film can be made on a relatively modest budget. His films are the kind of films that will eventually become part of Tamil cinema’s history.

“Even if he does not receive the recognition he deserves immediately, Tamil cinema will celebrate him and his work ten or fifteen years from now. He will certainly receive that recognition.

“Because of the love he has for cinema, cinema will one day celebrate him,” Cheran added.

“Please help take ‘ONE MAN’ to audiences” – Sathyaraj

Actor Sathyaraj spoke about his association with Sangagiri Rajkumar and explained why he chose to support the film.

Sathyaraj recalled how he was introduced to Rajkumar through veteran Periyarist leader Kovai Ramakrishnan, who requested him to meet the filmmaker and extend his support.

He also recalled that Rajkumar had asked him to play himself in the film, with a brief appearance as Periyar in a song.

“After acting in 125 films, I directed Villadhi Villain. That was when I realised how enjoyable acting actually is.

“But even now, I am unable to understand how ‘ONE MAN’ is possible. How can one person do all these jobs? Even after hearing about it, I am still amazed.

“I was stunned after watching Vengayam. Cheran played a major role in helping the film return to theatres and succeed. I was also impressed by his Bioscope.
